What are the accepted forms of Evidence of Copyright Ownership?

The following documents and materials are recognized as valid evidence of copyright ownership: 

  • In-progress studio images or videos of the artwork 
  • Consignment paperwork from a gallery 
  • Invoice or bill of sale for the physical artwork 
  • Gallery inventory or exhibition checklist paperwork listing the physical piece 
  • Press clippings related to the artwork 
  • Art database listings 
  • Auction listings 
  • Museum, foundation, or institutional listings, as well as academic articles 
  • Documentation of commercial collaborations involving the artwork 
  • Will & testament, certificate of death, or a letter from a lawyer 
  • Contract of copyright ownership transfer or purchase 
  • Installation images of an art fair booth, including the artwork, the artist's name displayed in vinyl type as a booth heading, and the gallery's name and details on the booth's sign in the top left or right corner of the wall 
  • Confirmations from Seminal Sales Teams who personally visited the artist (e.g., studio visit, gallery opening, exhibition tour, art fair booth, etc.)
